Making mountains in rural Europe more resilient

Bron: enrd.ec.europa.eu België: 2022-03-31 17: 47: 48 , ENRD News [ad_1] Many mountain areas in Member States receive special support from the CAP due to the natural constraints involved in farming upland areas. Cohesion policy also invests significantly in EU mountain regions and a new EU-wide communication campaign explains this rural funding’s results. Cohesion funding in mountain regions co-finances new and improved infrastructure including key investments in transport, broadband, energy, education, tourism, water, and sewerage, and much more. All this funding helps make rural Europe more resilient and improves opportunities for synergies with CAP support. The Montana174 communication material explains how EU Cohesion Policy helps mountain areas to be more sustainable in simple and concise terms. [ad_2] Lees dit artikel en meer van enrd.ec.europa.eu

This includes observing how EU rural communities compare in relation to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Lidija Pavić-Rogošić is the rapporteur for the EESC’s opinion on the Long-term vision for rural areas and she is closely following the Rural Pact’s progress. She has been a member of the Croatian Network for Rural Development since its early days and was a founder of Croatia first LEADER Local Action Group. Her EESC role involves raising awareness about the EU’s enablement of Agenda 2030 actions and she advocates sustainable rural transformation so that no one is left behind in the EU’s prosperity. She and the EESC believe that “rural inequality and inequality between rural and urban areas need to be addressed, and respect for the political voice and concerns of the rural population must be part of a process aimed at improving their lives.”

attention on Europe’s groundwater — European Environment Agency

Bron: www.eea.europa.eu België: 2022-03-22 10: 58: 07 , News [ad_1] The EEA briefing ‘Europe’s groundwater — a key resource under pressure' provides an overview of the state of groundwater in the European Union (EU). The briefing is published on the World Water Day 2022, with the theme ‘Groundwater: making the invisible visible’. In the EU, groundwater supplies 65% of drinking water and 25% of water for agricultural irrigation. However, according to the latest EEA data, about a quarter of the total groundwater body area in the EU is in poor chemical status and 9% in poor quantitative status. Considering both poor chemical and quantitative status, about 29% of the EU’s groundwater body area lacks capacity to meet the needs of ecosystems and people, the EEA briefing states. The main reason for poor chemical status in EU groundwater is diffuse pollution from agriculture, most commonly nitrates and pesticides. Reasons for poor quantitative status mainly arise from excessive abstraction for irrigation, especially in southern Europe. Over-abstraction of coastal freshwater aquifers may also result in saline intrusion from seawater, which can make groundwater unusable for decades or increase the cost of treatment, the EEA briefing warns. Climate change is expected worsen these problems as demand for... Lees meer

Larvae breeding for feed production for fish, poultry and pig

Bron: enrd.ec.europa.eu België: 2022-03-14 20: 31: 30 , ENRD Projects and Practice [ad_1] This innovation project was focused on whether the use of insect larvae in fish, chicken and pig feed would be more environmentally friendly than current, widely used yet ecologically problematic, protein sources such as imported soy and fishmeal. To respond to this question, a transdisciplinary team worked for three years to investigate several aspects of the challenge. Black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens L.) were fed by-products from food production (also called source substrate), and then used to produce substitutes that were added to compound feeds used in pig, chicken, and fish farming. Their nutritional properties, their economic efficiency, and their impact on GHG emissions were then tested.   [ad_2] Lees dit artikel en meer van enrd.ec.europa.eu

Bron: enrd.ec.europa.eu België: 2022-03-14 20: 42: 39 , ENRD Projects and Practice [ad_1] The intensification of agriculture is a major contributor to the loss of biodiversity and the extinction of many species, and between them, existing agri-environmental programmes and the private agricultural extension services are often not able to fully address the issue. To address this gap in advisory services, the Fördergemeinschaft Ökologischer Landbau Berlin-Brandenburg e.V. (FÖL) set up an advisory programme in cooperation with different authorities in Brandenburg. Through it, farmers can receive free advice on how to improve their nature conservation practices, while at the same time learning ‘peer-to-peer’ from a group of demonstration farms about new conservation ideas and options.  [ad_2] Lees dit artikel en meer van enrd.ec.europa.eu
