Bron: enrd.ec.europa.eu België: 2022-06-30 10: 04: 11 , ENRD News [ad_1] France’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament have reached a provisional political agreement about a new regulation for statistics on agricultural inputs and products (SAIO). This regulation proposal is part of the modernisation of the European system of agricultural statistics designed to advance knowledge about agricultural practices and production. The co-legislators agreed on the scope of the new SAIO regulation, the frequency of transmission of the data collected, in particular for plant protection products and organic farming. It was acknowledged that the revised SAIO regulation should apply appropriate safeguards to avoid risks from increased administrative burden for farmers and national administrations. Next steps for this initiative to improve and strengthen statistics on agricultural inputs and products in agriculture will involve approval by the Council and the European Parliament and moving on to the formal stages of the adoption procedure. New tool for structural data from agricultural censuses
Bron: enrd.ec.europa.eu België: 2022-06-30 10: 06: 38 , ENRD News [ad_1] Agricultural policymakers, researchers and broader rural development stakeholders can now take advantage of a powerful new data tool within the world’s largest agricultural database hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). DG AGRI has been promoting a new public policy tool this month based on agricultural census data which was unveiled recently for FAOSTAT to complement its existing wealth of data on production, trade and consumption in agricultural sectors. The FAO database’s new domain on Structural Data from Agricultural Censuses enables easier comparison and assessment of trends over time. It allows rapid access to figures about how many farms exist in a given country, what their sizes are, the tenure typology determining its ownership, the farmer’s gender, and how many people live and work on them, all sourced from national agricultural censuses. European examples spotlighted by the FAO to underline the new tool’s possibilities include a reference to FAOSTAT data showing, for instance, that: 40% or more of all agricultural holdings are headed by women in Lithuania and Latvia but nowhere in the database is female ownership above 50%. In eight countries, all in Europe, 60% or more of farmland is rented rather than operated by owners, including France and Germany. [ad_2] Lees dit artikel en meer van enrd.ec.europa.eu
Survey: disruptions to agri-food supply chains
Bron: enrd.ec.europa.eu België: 2022-06-30 10: 08: 04 , ENRD News [ad_1] The European Cluster Collaboration Platform (ECCP) is interested in receiving feedback from agri-food value chain companies from all over Europe to assess the state-of-play with any supply chain disruptions as a consequence of the current Ukrainian crisis. Under the present geopolitical circumstances, some supply chains and production lines are suffering disruptions or are at risk of suffering them in the near future. An ECCP survey is now open to help identify solution-oriented approaches as well as prepare roadmaps for joint projects that deal with supply chain disruptions across Europe. Companies, clusters, industry stakeholders, research organisations and others are encouraged to participate in this survey and share their ideas on how to solve the issues of the supply chain disruptions. Survey results will feed into the upcoming Cluster Collaboration Lab (C2Lab) at the end of June. [ad_2] Lees dit artikel en meer van enrd.ec.europa.eu

How to protect vulnerable groups from climate change? — European Environment Agency
Bron: www.eea.europa.eu België: 2022-06-29 11: 00: 24 , News [ad_1] The EEA briefing "Towards ‘just resilience’: leaving no one behind when adapting to climate change" outlines which groups in Europe are most affected by climate change, what kind of adaptation measures can protect those groups, and how social justice can be embedded in adaptation policies and actions. More and more vulnerable Europeans are increasingly exposed to dangerous heat waves, due to the combination of rising temperatures, urbanisation, and the ageing of the population, according to the EEA briefing. Flood-prone areas in some countries tend to have higher shares of the elderly or unemployed people who may not be able to relocate or pay for insurances or adequate flood protection for their homes. The EEA analysis also shows that nearly half of schools and hospitals in European cities are within intense urban heat islands, and every tenth European school or hospital may be exposed to flooding. Moreover, the EEA briefing notes that climate change adaptation measures rarely benefit everyone to the same extent. Making sure that the most vulnerable groups are not left behind — building ‘just resilience’ — requires that adaptation measures benefit those groups specifically and that they are not excessively impacted by the burdens of adaptation. For example, investments in green spaces can be made in locations that need them the most for cooling, flood protection and improving the quality of life. According to the EEA briefing, EU and national climate policies currently emphasise the need for equitable solutions but the practical implementation of such solutions remains scarce. Equitable climate change adaptation that ensures social justice requires the involvement of the vulnerable groups themselves as well as decision-makers from EU level to national and local levels. Exposure to pollution causes 10% of all cancer cases in Europe — European Environment Agency
Bron: www.eea.europa.eu België: 2022-06-28 01:02:07 , News [ad_1] Pollutants in the environment and at the workplace, as well as some natural risks, have a huge impact on our health, and in some cases lead to cancer, according to the EEA web report 'Beating cancer — the role of Europe’s environment'. With nearly 3 million new patients and 1.3 million deaths each year across the European Union, cancer takes a huge toll on our society. The economic costs are also enormous, estimated at around EUR 178 billion in 2018 alone. Most of these environmental and occupational cancer risks can be reduced by preventing pollution and changing behaviours, according to the EEA study. Reducing exposure to these risks offers an effective and cost-effective way of reducing cancer cases and associated deaths. For the first time, the EEA investigated the links between cancer and the environment, reviewing the latest scientific evidence on air pollution, radon, ultraviolet radiation, second-hand smoke and chemicals. The report estimates that environmental and occupational risks lie behind around 10% of cancer cases in Europe. Virginijus Sinkevičius, EU Commissioner for the Environment, Fisheries and Oceans, said: “The EEA report highlights that too many cancer cases have an underlying environmental cause. The good news is that we can act now to cut pollution and prevent deaths. With the Zero Pollution ambition of the European Green Deal we can deliver cost-effective cancer prevention benefits by reducing exposure to harmful pollutants. What is better for the environment is also better for us.” Stella Kyriakides, EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, said: “Every year in Europe, an estimated over a quarter of a million lives are lost to environmental related cancer. Prevention will always be better than cure, and as part of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, we have made a strong commitment to reduce contaminants in water, soil and air. Only this week we delivered a landmark proposal under our Farm to Fork Strategy to reduce the use of pesticides with 50% by 2030. The findings of the European Environment Agency show very clearly how the health of our planet and the health of our citizens are closely interlinked. We need to work with nature, not against it.” Hans Bruyninckx, EEA Executive Director, said: “We see the impact pollution in our environment has on the health and quality of life of European citizens and that is why preventing pollution is so crucial to our well-being. Cutting pollution through the EU’s Zero Pollution Action pPlan and the Chemical Strategy for Sustainability as well as strong implementation of other existing EU policies would go a long way to reduce cancer cases and deaths. This would be an effective investment in our citizens' well-being. Environmental risks Air pollution (both indoor and outdoor) is linked to around 1% of all cancer cases in Europe, and causes around 2% of all cancer deaths. For lung cancers alone, this rises to 9% of deaths. Recent studies have detected associations between long term exposure to particulate matter, a key air pollutant,...
