Agricultural input and output statistics: new regulatory framework

France’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament have reached a provisional political agreement about a new regulation for statistics on agricultural inputs and products (SAIO). 

This regulation proposal is part of the modernisation of the European system of agricultural statistics designed to advance knowledge about agricultural practices and production. The co-legislators agreed on the scope of the new SAIO regulation, the frequency of transmission of the data collected, in particular for plant protection products and organic farming. It was acknowledged that the revised SAIO regulation should apply appropriate safeguards to avoid risks from increased administrative burden for farmers and national administrations.

Next steps for this initiative to improve and strengthen statistics on agricultural inputs and products in agriculture will involve approval by the Council and the European Parliament and moving on to the formal stages of the adoption procedure.
